I hate waste when it comes to food, I also never remember to buy food for lunches on days when we are at home, the kids obviously but the Hubby and I, nope.
For this reason the Hubby often at the weekend will pop to the shops to pick up a French Stick, he loves to have a nice big sandwich for lunch. The problem is then there was always a large amount left and let’s be honest within a couple of days that is hard and not overly usable.
So I came up with a lunch that would not only use the French Stick before it got chucked away but also really only needs things I always have in the fridge anyway.
The great thing with French Stick Melts is they can be altered to either whatever your taste or what you have in the fridge.

Today’s recipes are simple ham & onion, but I have made them with Italian meats, added extra veg such as Peppers or Tomatoes and if you want to you can even add some sauces under the cheese, maybe some Tomato Puree to make more like a Pizza.
Ham & Onion French Stick Melts
French Stick
Butter
Onion (Diced)
Ham
Cheese (We used Emmental)
- Preheat oven to 200°
- Cut the French Stick into 3/4 inch section and then half
- Butter each piece
- Add some diced onion on top of the butter
- Then add cut up chunks of Ham
- Cover with Cheese
- Place on baking tray in oven for approx. 10 mins, just until cheese is melted
- Serve and enjoy

These really are great as a simple lunch or can be served with chips and salad for dinner, they are a great to get the kids involved in making to and as I said can be altered for anyones tastes.

We have also made small versions at parties where you cut rings of French Stick, they always go down a treat.
Do let me know if you give them a try and what you add to yours. I am always looking for new things to try on them, think I shall add some sweetcorn next time.
